    • 1). Open the rear hatch. Use a broom or similar device to hold the hatch up while you replace the struts. Use something long enough that it relieves the tension on the strut bolts.

    • 2). Pry the ball on the bottom end of the strut out of the socket with a screwdriver. The strut should pop out after you have pried it about ¼ inch.

    • 3). Remove the bolt that holds the top strut to the lift gate with the appropriate socket or Torx bit. This will vary depending on the make and model. Examine the strut where it fastens to determine the best way to remove it.

    • 4). Install the top of the strut to the lift gate with the same bolts the old one was installed with. Tighten the bolt.

    • 5). Install the ball at the bottom of the strut onto the ball connector. You may need to pry the clip on the connector up a little to get the ball to seat firmly in the connector.

    • 6). Leave whatever you have supporting the hatch in place while you install the other strut in the same manner that you installed the first one. Remove the tool that is supporting the hatch.

    • 7). Test the new struts by closing and then opening the hatch. The struts should raise the hatch automatically when you open the hatch and pull it up about half way.
