Tennessee's official state slogan is "Tennessee--America at Its Best," and this could apply to its haunted houses just as much as it does to its country music scene. Knoxville in particular boasts several haunted houses for the scare-seeking guest or visitor. From psychopathic seafood restaurant killers to black-magic-practicing families, Knoxville's haunted houses have stories behind them, and ones sure to scare. - FrightWorks Haunted House spooks Knoxville residents annually with a variety of special effects, including animatronics, optical illusions, custom lighting and professional sound effects. A small team with decades of collective experience is behind the scares at FrightWorks. Each year, it builds and presents new haunted attractions to the house, including the Carnival of Fear, Terror on the Turnpike and The Maze: Labyrinth of Fear. These attractions offer terrors such as a dark maze, werewolf transformation, torture chamber, zombie graveyard and killer clowns. It often comes up with entire back stories for its attractions, as in the case of The Legend of Tremble Hotel, which tells the story of a haunted hotel's artifacts being cursed. FrightWorks often donates a portion of its money to nonprofit organizations. According to Kara from Goblinhaus, "The scenes were great, and the actors were even better."

frightworks.com - Dead Man's Farm Haunted House is set on an actual farm about 25 miles outside of Knoxville and uses props, strobe lighting, sound effects and actors to terrorize visitors in the Knoxville area every year. According to legend, the Bludgeon family who used to live in the house practiced black magic and mutilated their livestock and farm hands. The house is rumored to be haunted by their evil spirits, and two paranormal teams have investigated the phenomenon. The house is "made to open it to the general public to remind people of the poor souls that died ..." A portion of all Dead Man's Farm proceeds go to support the Loudon County Fire and Rescue Squad.

deadmansfarm.com - Located 40 minutes outside of Knoxville, Frightmare Manor is allegedly the site of a former seafood restaurant where a man named Drake used to lure single customers and torture them in the cellar. The ghosts of his victims are said to haunt Frightmare Manor. Visitors must sign a release form before entering Frightmare Manor. Those who make it through all the haunts of the manor's Nightmare at Frightmare get a refund on their money and get their picture put up on the "Survivor's Wall." Those who don't get their picture placed on the "Victim's Wall" and are escorted out. It is only one of four haunted houses in the country to offer such a guarantee, according to Hauntworld.
