How to Propagate Maple Bonsai
- 1). Select a twig from a maple tree that is low on the tree's limbs. This twig will be younger than branches higher on the tree and will be more likely to root. The twig should be disease free and strong. July is the best time to make cuttings from maples.
- 2). Place your pruning shears 6 inches from the tip of the twig. Snip through the twig using a clean cut with your shears. Do not crush the twig.
- 3). Remove any flowers and seeds from the twig. Remove leaves from the lowest two thirds of the branch.
- 4). Dip the cut tip of the twig into a rooting hormone. Fill a peat pot with peat moss. Insert the twig halfway into the peat moss.
- 5). Place the peat pot in a plastic freezer bag and close the bag. Put the bag in a sunny windowsill. The bag will keep the maple moist until it produces its own roots. Remove the bag once the maple produces roots.
