How to Submit a Reality TV Idea

    • 1). Write down your concept as clearly as possible (clear enough that an elementary school student would be able to understand it). For example, your concept might be having beautiful women compete in close quarters for a common goal.

    • 2). Write down several different approaches to your concept. For example, Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model" already stemmed from the concept stated above. But, it could also have given us a show about beautiful actresses competing for parts in Los Angeles or pageant contestants in Louisiana competing for the title of Miss Louisiana.

    • 3). Ask your friends, co-workers and family members for their assessment about how marketable your concept and approaches are. Decide if the show would be more popular with men, women, children, teenage boys or teenage girls.

    • 4). Type your name, title of show, format of the show ("Reality Series") and logline (brief description of your show concept) on separate lines in a blank computer document.

    • 5). Write a treatment (a one- to two-page detailed synopsis of the show). Outline the substance of the show as it unfolds. Write what viewers should expect from watching it, why it will be enjoyable and why it's different from anything on television at this time.

    • 6). Register your treatment with the Writers Guild of America. Go to WGAWregistry.org and click on "register online." Type in your personal information and your credit card information, for it will cost you $20 to register your treatment. Upload your treatment. Once registered, you will get a WGA registration number.

    • 7). Type in your WGA registration number between the lines that proclaim the format of the show and the logline.

    • 8). Make a list of networks that you think might be interested in your concept. For example, the TLC network is more likely to be interested in shows about family, home, style and cooking. On the other hand, the Sci-Fi network would be more likely to be interested in a show about the supernatural.

    • 9). Visit the website of each network that you think might be suitable for your show. Find the number for the corporate headquarters. Contact corporate and ask to be connected to the development department. Once transferred there, ask to speak to the person in charge of new idea concepts. Explain your concept in one sentence, and say that you 'd like to email your treatment. Write down the appropriate email address.
