How to Deal With a Boss You Don't Respect

    • 1). Evaluate your performance in your work place, such as whether you arrive on time and finish your responsibilities. Ask yourself if your work is deteriorating because you do not respect your boss, as it is common to let your work responsibilities slide in these situations. For instance, you may evaluate your own professionalism, work quality and your relationships with your coworkers. Ask yourself if you are able to keep a positive attitude while at work, or if your issues with your boss prevent you from being a positive influence.

    • 2). Make a list of the issues you have with your boss, the problems that prevent you from having respect for her. Include any issues that disturb you, such as her experience, her age, how she received the position or her expertise. Consider any personal issues you are feeling, things that may have nothing to do with your boss, such as your desire for her job or your general unhappiness with your company. If you realize that your lack of respect is more personal, such as your issue with your boss's gender or dissatisfaction with your own career, focus on changing those aspects of yourself. As an example, if you realize that you wanted the promotion, rededicate yourself to earning it.

    • 3). Ask yourself if you want to stay at your current position, or if you are able to work comfortably and effectively in your current position under your boss. If you believe that you cannot be happy in your position, begin looking for new employment. For instance, if you cannot respect your boss because he is much younger than you and much less experienced, you may realize that the environment is not something you can repair and decide to seek employment elsewhere.

    • 4). Set your own high standards and govern your own work by them, especially in situations where you decide that you want to stay in your current position. Set your standards above those set by your boss, and work hard to live up to your goals. As an example, you may decide to start finishing your work tasks early and spend a little time each day researching your company's product line, staying more informed about your company's direction.
