Music documentaries (and feature films, for that matter) are almost a two-for-one deal: you get fantastic music along with stunning images of your favorite artists in action.
Look to the following list for the five best movies in this genre.
Of course, take these selections with a grain of salt.
Both movies and music are highly subjective, and when put together on an HD TV for the entire world to see, it's somewhat difficult to find consensus! Walk the Line: Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon team up to deliver one of the most powerful performances of all time.
Phoenix brings Johnny Cash to the big screen, and does it with style and panache.
Released shortly after the country icon's death, this is one film that truly does its subject justice.
Make sure to catch it in high definition if you want to truly appreciate Cash's musical journey and evolution.
Festival Express: Perhaps more of a cult classic than the other films on this list, Festival Express takes the viewer on a tour of Canada led by the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, and a host of other performers.
You won't be able to turn away from the screen, guaranteed.
If you're a Joplin fan, this is a must-see, especially considering the fact that it was filmed months before her death, and represents some of the last known footage of the powerful folk singer.
The Last Waltz: If you still haven't had your fill of The Band after Festival Express, look for The Last Waltz on satellite TV.
The Band brings a number of incredible performers on stage to celebrate their "Last Waltz", including Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.
As if you needed another reason, check the back of the DVD for directing credits: you'll find a certain Martin Scorsese listed.
O Brother Where Art Thou?: If you like Bluegrass (or Homer's Odyssey), you'll love O Brother Where Art Thou? Join George Clooney and his crew of misfits as they travel through Depression-era Mississippi in search of riches.
While the dialogue and script are both stellar, the movie's true genius is found in its soundtrack, written by renowned fiddler Allison Krauss.
You'll watch this once, and run out to the store to buy the CD.
A Concert for George: Eric Clapton put this all-star affair together one year after the death of Beatles guitarist George Harrison.
Filmed in HD, you won't want to miss performances by artists as varied as Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar, and the full cast of Monty Python.
Keep a box of tissues nearby; the film is sure to invoke some tears from the heartfelt performances.
You'll be sure to want to check out each of these films as soon as you get a chance.
If you're looking for a holiday gift for a loved one, also be sure to consider one of these pieces.
They make present-giving a cinch, especially if your friend or family member has a particular favorite band or group.
