Do it Yourself Valentine Decorations

    Materials and Supplies

    • It's helpful to lay out your supplies before beginning, to give you a better picture of the crafts you can make or any additional supplies you want to pick up. Chances are you already have a lot of the materials you'll need, such as construction paper, poster board, markers, paint, fabrics, stencils, glue, glitter, tape, scissors, string, balloons and candy. If you're not a good drawer, or don't have stencils, you can print out valentine-themed clip art and letters (see links in the resources section). The decorations you make can be modified to suit a specific age group as well.

    Paper Decorations

    • Using the paper you have, cut out hearts in different colors and shapes to decorate. You can include a saying; write the name of your valentine, or anything else you would like. The markers and glitter help to add a colorful and personal touch. If you have an old sheet or other fabric lying around, you can use that instead of (or in addition) to the paper. Draw or print out pictures of things such as candy, Cupid, bow and arrows, and cupcakes to decorate your space and create a themed environment. You can also use photographs or pictures from magazines.

Instead of a Happy Birthday banner, you can make a Happy Valentine's Day banner, by writing each letter on a piece of paper, poking a small hole in the top center of the paper, and running a string through it. Hang the banner from a wall, window or entryway. Another idea is to draw a bottle of potion. You can use a perfume bottle or beverage bottle as an outline if you need one. Label it "love potion" (or name your own concoction) and hang it up as well. You can also make a paper flower bouquet, by downloading and customizing a template (see link in the resources).

    DIY Custom Decorations

    • Scattering rose petals and candles (if appropriate) is easy and takes only a few minutes to do. Instead of rose petals, you can decorate with candy hearts were kisses. You can gather a bunch of small rocks or stones, wash them off and paint them as well. Using the rocks, you can spell out a name or Valentine's Day saying.

You can also add a creative touch to already existing decorations. For example, if you have a small plant, cover it with chocolate kisses and attach hearts to the pot. Make up your own labels to cover things like soap, jars and containers. Take a couple of magazines or books, and make up your own covers for them. You may want to rename them something like "My Valentine," "Love," "XOXO," or other creative titles. Print out love coupons, or take a bunch of takeout menus and change them into your very own Valentine's Day menus for decoration.
