What Fertilizer to Use for a Jasmine Plant
- Add a fertilizer high in phosphorus to container-grown jasmine plants every two weeks during the spring and summer to encourage flower production. Use a water-based solution of the fertilizer in place of the regular water, following the directions on the packaging. Replace the soil every two or three years to prevent a buildup of salts from the fertilizers.
- Add little to no fertilizer to garden grown jasmine plants where the soil is amended every year with organic matter as the plant will subtract enough nourishment from healthy soil. Add a balanced fertilizer every two weeks in the spring and summer only if the leaves are yellowing or the plant seems stunted in its growth.
- Fertilize natural or wild plants of jasmine by mulching around their base with a mulch of compost in the spring and summer. Add a slow-release balanced fertilizer to the mulch if the plant seems to be lacking in fragrance or if the soil is low in organic matter.
- Feed the higher scented royal jasmine with more fertilizer than the poet's jasmine as it has more flowers and larger flowers. Use the high phosphorus fertilizer every week in the spring when the buds are in full development.
