How to Replant a Stargazer Lily Outside

    • 1). Turn a 1-inch layer of compost into a well-drained, full-sun garden bed after frost danger passes in the spring. Plant the lilies near the rear of established beds, otherwise their height blocks any flowers planted behind them.

    • 2). Turn the lily pot upside down, placing your hand over the top to support the soil and root ball as it slides out of the pot. Thump the sides and bottom of the pot to loosen the soil, if necessary.

    • 3). Rinse the stargazer bulbs clean with a gentle stream of water. Separate the bulbs carefully if multiple bulbs were planted in a single pot. Lily bulbs have scales on them that break off easily if not handled carefully.

    • 4). Plant each bulb so its top sits 6 inches beneath the soil surface. Space the bulbs 8 inches apart in clusters of five, and space each cluster about 12 inches apart.

    • 5). Water the bed thoroughly after planting. Continue to water once weekly so the soil remains moist to a 6- to 8-inch depth. The lilies bloom naturally in late summer each year.
