    • 1). Pay especially close attention to your laptop heat when performing activities like games or viewing 3D graphics. These types of activities can cause your laptop to overheat more quickly.

    • 2). Watch out for warning signs of overheating. Running slowly or randomly shutting down are classic signs that your laptop is overheating.

    • 3). Make note of where all your laptop's vents are, and do not block them. The vents are used to keep the laptop at a stable temperature. Depending on the structure of your laptop, it may be possible to block the vents while typing. This should always be avoided.

    • 4). Touch your laptop with the palms of your hands or forearms, which are more sensitive than your fingertips. All laptops will have a different "danger-zone" temperature that signifies overheating, but if it feels too hot for your comfort, then it's probably overheating or getting close to it.

    • 5). Contact the manufacturer of your laptop to find out if it has an internal temperature sensor, and how to access it. Not all laptops have this feature, and it could be located in various places, such as the CPU or the hard drive.

    • 6). Utilize online resources, such as Core Temp and MobileMeter (see Resources), which are free software programs that you can download and use to monitor your laptop's heat.
