What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic Dermatitis is a very common skin disorder which can affect principally the scalp, but can also appear on the chest, arm pits and groin. There is no permanent cure however there is Seborrheic Dermatitis treatment, which we will talk about a bit later.

Seborrheic Dermatitis is generally a red rash that can become scaling and crusty in nature. When this occurs on the scalp, flakes can fall resembling dandruff. Other areas of the face, including the eyebrows, beard and mustache areas, are also common places for this condition to occur.

This can become visually embarrassing for some people, but the good news is that there are Seborrheic Dermatitis treatments out there to help control the condition. You can read about these at the bottom of this article.

This condition is also quite common in babies and is referred to as 'cradle cap'. Cradle cap in babies generally goes away after the first year and does not come back, so there are no lasting effects.

What Causes Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Unfortunately the cause of this specific condition is not currently known. There is a lot of speculation however no conclusive evidence has been discovered as at. There is speculation that the causes of other skin conditions could play a part in the cause:

- Stress
- Adverse weather conditions - this will dry out the skin very quickly
- Dry living space - again this will increase your chances of having very dry skin
- Bad Diet - not drinking enough water could be one factor in having dry skin.

The reality is that nobody really knows what causes it, so you just need to be prepared to treat it.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment

In relation to the areas with hair e.g. the scalp, it is generally administered in the form of a shampoo. You can find these shampoos over the counter or can be prescribed by your doctor. Typically this will contain an antifungal antibiotic, zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide.

In addition to the shampoo, and also for other areas, a topical agent should be used. This is usually a steroid or antifungal cream that will reduce the redness, dryness and scaling. Again this is something you can ask for over the counter at your local pharmacy.

If your condition worsens and no Seborrheic Dermatitis treatment works then you should visit your doctor where a stronger antifungal agent/cream could be issued.
