How to Lay Centipede Sod
- 1). Plan to lay centipede sod in May or June, since centipede grass laid earlier than May is likely to dry out, and grass laid later than June is prone to pest problems.
- 2). Spray weed killer over the entire planting area two weeks prior to laying sod.
- 3). Rake the planting area and remove rocks and debris after weeds have been exterminated. Roll the area to locate any low spots in the earth, and fill low spots with soil.
- 4). Add lime and fertilizer to the planting area to prepare the ground for centipede sod. Use 50 pounds lime and 10 pounds fertilizer per 1000 square feet and add 1 inch of compost cover.
- 5). Till the soil and added lime, fertilizer and compost thoroughly, 6 to 8 inches deep, to loosen the dirt underneath.
- 6). Irrigate the tilled soil with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water to dampen the ground 12 to 24 hours before you lay centipede sod.
- 7). Lay sod beginning with the longest straight strip of land, placing each piece tightly adjacent to the previous sod to avoid cracks in the lawn.
- 8). Stagger the sod pieces in the next row to break up the seams in the lawn, trimming centipede sod squares with a shovel to fit areas where only a partial square is needed.
- 9). Roll the entire area of centipede grass with a roller to bond the soil, and water thoroughly immediately after you lay centipede sod.

Water new centipede sod every day until the soil has rooted, after which you may assume a regular watering schedule according to your climate and local watering ordinances.
