Clippered-neck hairstyles are hair cuts in which the back, nape area, of the hair is tapered very close via hair clippers. While clippered-hair cuts are traditionally seen on men, many short, woman's hair cuts also use clippers to taper the nape close. The clippered areas can be cut with the help of a guard attachment on the clippers, which ensures the hair is cut to a specific length, or free-hand with the clipper-over-comb method for those with more clipper experience. - The modern version of a traditional man's hair cut is a clippered cut. Clippers are used to cut the back, neck area and sides of the hair. Typically the hair is cut 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length, but can be as short as 1/8 inch for military hair cuts. The hair on the top is cut short, usually 1 1/2 to 3 inches in length and blended into the length of the sides and back. Blending can be done with the scissor-over-comb or clipper-over-comb method. Both methods involve inserting the cutting comb into the hair, horizontally, to act as a guide and guard. The scissors or clippers are then used to cut off the excess hair to blend the two lengths. Trimmers are then used to clean up the hairline at the back of the head and around the ears.
- This woman's clippered-neck hair cut is a bold style, best suited to women with medium or thick, straight hair. The cut best suits oval, square or oblong face shapes. To create this hairstyle the sides and back are shaved to a length of 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. The neck area is shaved up to the occipital bone, the protruding bone at the base of the skull, and the sides are shaved level with the temple. The top of the hair is left much longer, usually 4 inches in length or more, to allow it to hang over the shaved hair. The hair is typically styled to be swept up and over to one side to create volume and movement. The singer Rihanna made this hairstyle popular.
- The short-pixie style is easy to style and is a good choice for women who don't want to spend a lot of time styling their hair each day. The short-pixie cut is best suited to women with an oval, diamond or oblong face shape and a clear complexion. The hair needs to be a fine or medium texture for best results. The sides and back are shaved with the clippers to 3/4 to 1 inch in length. The top length is cut to 2 or 3 inches and blended with the sides and back. If the hair is medium texture, a straight razor is used to thin the hair and remove excess bulk.
