    Mild Dish Detergent

    • Plexiglass is highly sensitive to acids, as well as any products containing ammonia or alcohol. For best results, use the mildest cleaning solution to clean plexiglass surfaces. As long as you don't have any stubborn stains or buildup, you should need nothing more than a couple of drops of dish detergent mixed with water--approximately 1 tsp. of detergent per pint of water. Apply the mix to a soft sponge or cloth and scrub your plexiglass surface.

    pH Neutral Cleaner

    • If dishwashing detergent proves insufficient, you can purchase a pH neutral cleaner from your local home improvement store. These cleaners contain no ammonia, acids or corrosives and will not react negatively with your plexiglass surface. They can nevertheless prove effective against streaks and stains. If you tend to have allergic reactions to harsh or chemical cleaning solvents, a pH neutral cleaner can allow you to get the job done without any irritation.

    Bleach

    • If you have especially difficult stains on your plexiglass surface, you can use a small amount of diluted bleach. Use at least 2 parts water per 1 part bleach and apply the mixture conservatively to the stained area using a spray bottle. Do not use bleach for routine cleaning of plexiglass; reserve it specifically for situations that call for difficult stain removal. Bleach can irritate skin, so wear rubber gloves.

    Precautions

    • Never attempt to clean or wipe down a plexiglass surface with a scouring pad, razorblade or stiff scrubbing brush. Plexiglass scratches easily so use only soft, lint-free cloths and sponges. Even paper towels can scratch plexiglass. After applying any cleaning solvent, rinse the plexiglass surface with warm water and dry by hand to prevent streaking and spotting. By cleaning your plexiglass surface each week with just mild detergent and water, you can prevent the kind of difficult buildup that may ultimately require harsher solvents.
