How to Prune Potato Plants
- 1). Trim ornamental sweet potato vines with pruners, at any time during the growing season, whether they are "sprawlers" in flower borders or "spillers" planted in containers. Make cuts just about anywhere; plants aren't too particular and will remain very vigorous. Shorten stems of flowering potato vine as needed to keep it in bounds, whether the vine is trained onto a trellis or fence or is allowed to roam freely. Make cuts as needed; flowering potato vines are similarly forgiving.
- 2). Thin both types of vines also, removing entire stems as needed to reduce their reach, if plants begin to overgrow their allotted space and encroach into flowerbeds or onto walkways and patios.
- 3). Propagate new ornamental sweet potato plants, instead of pruning away unwanted stems, by allowing sections of these stem-rooting vines to root at nodes either on the ground of in a pot of soil. Snip the stem or stems connected to "mother plants" once the new plants are well rooted.
