How to Test Soil at Home for Growing Characteristics of Grass
- 1). Select a comprehensive soil home testing kit, available at gardening centers. The test should check for soil pH, as well as for of calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen.
- 2). Wash two buckets and a garden trowel in hot, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly.
- 3). Dig five holes in your turf, spaced throughout, using the trowel. Each should measure about 3 inches deep.
- 4). Slice off about 1/2 inch of soil along the side of one hole, using the garden trowel.
- 5). Set this sample into a bucket.
- 6). Repeat the slicing procedure for each of the five holes, each time placing the sample in the same bucket.
- 7). Mix the soil samples together in the bucket, using the hand trowel.
- 8). Spread newspapers out in a dry, warm location--ideally in a sunny spot. Lay the soil on top of the newspapers and allow it to dry.
- 9). Using the trowel, scoop up some of the dirt and place it in a second bucket.

Proceed with the actual testing, as specified on the soil testing kit's packaging, using the mixed, dry soil in the second bucket.
