According to MenStuff (See Reference 1), an online resource for men, emo is a slang and somewhat ambiguous term that people commonly use to describe a particular, emotionally-charged subculture and its many aspects, such as emo fashion and music. The culture is often characterized by self-loathing and an affection for concepts and art that many consider depressing. Not surprisingly, the style relies predominately on dark colors. If you are thinking of remodeling a bedroom and giving it an emo theme, there are several ideas that can help. - While painting all of a bedroom's walls black may seem like the most emo-statement you can make in the space provided, from a design perspective it has many flaws. As the emo and scene culture website Emo Love (See Reference 3) notes, four black walls will make your room appear smaller than it actually it is, and will create a poorly lit, gloomy atmosphere. As an alternative, and as a way to display your creativity, try painting one wall black and then choose a variety of brighter colors for painting the other walls. According to the decorating website Emo 4 My Space (See Reference 1), you could also paint one focal wall a dark or bold color of your choosing, and then paint the other three walls with a paint that is a quarter of its strength---or a quarter lighter. Painting stripes and checkerboard patterns onto one or multiple walls is also a popular emo bedroom option.
- The emotionally driven and characteristically whiny music of emo culture plays an integral role in emo fashion and design. According to Emo Love, a popular option for emo wall art is to hang up posters and album artwork from emo musicians and bands. You may also want to display band memorabilia such as concert ticket stubs, concert programs and set-lists or drumsticks--if you are lucky enough to find or receive them while attending a show. As part of the emo culture involves self-expression and confession, or admitting personal flaws, you may also want to devote one wall of your room to your own works of art. These include visual arts such as photographs, paintings and sketches, as well as literary pieces like poems, song lyrics or slogans. You may even wish to paint text directly on to a wall. Just make sure to use contrasting colors--which means using light paint on dark walls and dark paint on light walls.
- When it comes to coverings for furniture items like beds, chairs, pillows and cushions, Emo Love recommends using black-and-red checks, or checkerboard patterns, which are a mainstay design in emo fashion. You can also use the design effectively for curtains, rugs and carpeting. As an alternative, you may wish to incorporate electric or neon colors, such as hot pink or neon green, into your furniture decor. These colors work especially well in rooms that already have lots of prominent dark features.
