How to Estimate the Volume of Concrete

    • 1). Determine the units you will use for your measurements. Your best bet is to visit your building supply store and look at the packaging of the concrete you plan to use. It will cite how much volume each bag will fill, in cubic inches, cubic feet or cubic yards. Use the same unit of measurement in the following steps.

    • 2). Choose the area where the concrete will be poured. This is usually an excavated area or the space inside of a frame built from coated lumber.

    • 3). Measure the length and width of this area. Have someone help you stretch the measuring tape if it is a large space. Write down these two measurements in the units you determined in step 1, and multiply them together.

    • 4). Measure the depth of the excavation or frame; this will stand as the height measurement. Keep in mind that the standard minimum depth for structures such as slabs and patios is 4 inches. Multiply the product from step 3 by the height measurement in the same units.

    • 5). Take the final number with you to purchase your concrete. Divide the number you have calculated by the volume that one bag of the product will fill in order to find the number of bags to purchase. If you end up with a decimal in your calculation, round up to the next whole bag, not down.
