Tips on Knitting With White Yarns

    Lighting

    • The proper lighting is crucial to any knitting project. Too much light and it's difficult to see what you are working on; too little light and mistakes are likely to be made. When knitting--especially with white yarn--you should have enough light that you can comfortably see the yarn and each stitch on your needles. Sit closer to the light than farther away; under a reading light is ideal.

    Background Light

    • In addition to a light source, if you are knitting with white yarn you should have a darker color behind the knitting, such as a dark-colored blanket on your lap. This darker color will contrast with the white yarn and make it easier to see each stitch in your knitting. If you can see your work clearly, you won't have as many dropped stitches.

    Knitting Needles

    • The right knitting needles are essential to any knitting project. Select the needles that best match the color and the fiber content of your yarn. Use bamboo or other wood needles for "slippery" yarn, such as acrylics, and try metal or plastic for natural fibers, such as wool. Purchase knitting needles at a yarn or craft store.

    Color

    • Not all whites are created equally--there are many variations in color. The shade and depth of white can depend on the manufacturer, fiber content or dye lot. If you are planning a large project with white yarn, be sure to buy enough in the same dye lot to complete your project. Some stores or websites specialize in yarn.

    Fibers

    • The type of fibers in the yarn can affect its ease of use. Choose smooth-stranded yarns, such as cotton or wool, which are easier to knit with compared to acrylic yarns. In addition, select a yarn that you feel comfortable with to ensure that your knitting project will be both easy and enjoyable.

    Warning

    • If you are knitting a project that is intended to be felted, avoid white yarn. Often, white yarn will not felt because of the bleaching process, which inhibits the chemical process that takes place when yarn felts.
