    • 1). Turn off the water supply at the shut-off valve near where you are working by turning the knob counterclockwise. If you don’t see a shut-off valve, shut off all of the water at the main water supply near the sidewalk in front of your home.

    • 2). Place a wrench on the nut around the compression fitting and twist it counterclockwise to loosen it. Pull the nut back and locate the copper ring underneath it. If the ring is loose or cracked, that is the cause of the leak.

    • 3). Pull the copper ring off of the pipe and throw it away. Slide a new copper ring over the end of the pipe, pushing it up inside the nut. Push the nut and the inner copper ring down onto the pipe you are connecting the fitting to and turn the nut clockwise with your fingers until it is fully tight.

    • 4). Loosen the outer nut and pull it back. You will see that the copper ring is compressed around the end of the pipe. Wrap a piece of plumber’s tape around the copper ring four to five times for further waterproofing. Then slide the nut back down and twist it clockwise to re-tighten it.

    • 5). Place a wrench around the nut on the compression fitting and secure the jaws tightly. Place a second wrench around the other fitting or pipe and secure the jaws tightly around it. Grasp one set of pliers in each hand and turn them in opposite directions to fully tighten the compression fitting.

    • 6). Turn the water supply back on and examine the repaired copper compression fitting for leaks.
