Researchers have found that these Far East destinations may have a higher rate of longevity and a lower rate of illness. Because of such astounding research, the Western culture is becoming more intrigued by a daily diet of seaweed.

"Ongoing studies are suggesting that fucoidan containing seaweeds is one of the best seaweeds for health and wellness," said Thierry Lerond, founder of the marine supplement company Nutrilys in France and Nutrilys Del Mar in San Diego, California. "The seaweed we consume from sushi is not the same.  Instead, we need to eat seaweed like brown wakame."

Fucoidan has been suggested to help with the following:
  • Detox and cleanse to help keep the body rejuvenated
  • Promotes cardiovascular and joint health
  • Supports tissue regeneration
  • Promotes healthy digestive system

In regard to joint health, some researchers believe since fucoidans naturally act as a detox component, it flushes out the toxins which may be trapped in the joints.  "The cleansing mechanism behind fucoidan helps rid these toxins which may trigger joint inflammation," Lerond shared.

While some studies continue to learn more about the benefits of fucoidans, other studies, are concentrating on the comparisons between Western and Asian cultures. Apparently, there is a clear distinction between the health and longevity between the two.  Parts of Asia are considered to have healthier percentages and this seaweed marine super food may be one reason.

Researchers discovered that in some Asian cultures, the daily consumption of fish, vegetables and fruits were also highly important.  Meals are based on the philosophy of holistic nutrition.

In the Western culture, Lerond said, it may not only be difficult to find brown wakame, but eating the right amounts for health optimization may be a challenge. Generally, these seaweed eating cultures consume 4 to 6 grams per day.

"In situations such as this, locating a fucoidan extract seaweed supplement, such as Fucorich®, is a great alternative," he said. Lerond continued, "It's important for buyers to keep in mind that the product should be certified in terms of being wild, organic, sustainable, and harvested in pristine waters such as Patagonia in Argentina."

A quality product can provide the same benefits as eating brown wakame; and, it's still very much considered a detox supplement, and also, a joint health supplement.

Lerond also pointed out that brown wakame seaweed is not a plant.  It's from the algae group.

"The reason why fucoidans are so potent is due to their long chain of molecules," Lerond said. "These molecules help the body with its physiological mechanisms."

As far as Lerond is concerned, the Western world can learn a great deal about the health and wellness of Asian cultures, particularly those who consume seaweed every day.

"Although we may not have brown wakame on hand like Asia, there are a handful of quality supplements which can provide the same health benefits," he said. "Marine based sources provide a variety of anti-aging supplement health gems and we can all gain from them."
