    Location, Location, Location

    • This tropical shrub requires good light but must not be in continual direct sunlight. In fact, it should get no more than one hour of morning or afternoon sun a day.

    Temperature

    • The Fukien tea bonsai thrives in temperatures ranging between 59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. You should never keep it in areas where temperatures will continually dip to below 53 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the shrub on a humidity tray to keep those levels consistent.

    Water

    • Water your Fukien tea bonsai often, reducing the watering schedule slightly during colder winter months. Never allow the soil to become completely dry. You have over-watered your bonsai when the leaves turn yellow or orange.

    Pruning and Upkeep

    • Start to prune your shrub after no more than eight leaves appear from new shoots. Because the leaves of the Fukien tea bonsai are so small, you should be able to style it by pruning alone, and will not need wire to give the shrub any particular style or shape.

    Re-potting

    • Repot your Fukien tea bonsai every three years during early spring using basic soil mix. After you prune the roots, reduce the watering and ensure the shrub receives bottom heat, as it promotes new root growth.
