Replacing Windows on a Brick Veneer Home
- 1). Measure the height and width of the opening of the window, taking the measurement from the inside tracks where the sashes sit. Move the sashes up and down as needed to get at the sides. Order a replacement window unit with those measurements. Leave the old windows in place until the new unit arrives.
- 2). Take out the old window when you have the new one ready to go in. Remove the old one by prying off the trim around the inside edge of the opening, using a pry bar and hammer. Keep the trim intact. Set it aside.
- 3). Set the new window unit into the opening, putting the bottom on the sill and pushing the top in. It should come to rest against the exterior border of trim.
- 4). Set shims into the spaces at the sides of the window unit while holding a level alongside the unit and adjust until it's level.
- 5). Drive mounting screws through the screw holes in the sides of the window unit and outward into the wall frame to secure it.
- 6). Tuck fiberglass insulation into the spaces around the edges of the unit.
- 7). Reinstall the trim with a trim nailer, covering the spaces. Run beads of caulk where the trim meets the window and the surrounding walls, inside and out.
