How to Refinish Particle Board Furniture
- 1). Sand the furniture with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the furniture and remove any finishes that might interfere with the application of the primer.
- 2). Determine what type of particle board your furniture is comprised of, and select a primer accordingly. If you have OSB (Oriented Strand Board) you can use a latex, water-based primer. If you have MDF or LDF (Medium/Lower Density Fiberboard, respectively), you need to use an oil-based primer, or a shellac. If you cannot determine what type of furniture you have, select the shellac.
- 3). Apply one coat of primer to the furniture in long, even strokes with a 2-inch foam brush or a foam roller for larger pieces of furniture. The furniture will be dry to the touch in a few hours, but the primer and sealer will work best if left to sit overnight.
- 4). Apply paint (in your desired finish) in long, even strokes with a 2-inch foam brush . You may need two coats of paint, depending on the original color of your furniture. Let the paint dry overnight.
- 5). Thinly coat the painted furniture with a varnish if the furniture will see a lot of use. Use a wipe-on varnish, applied it with a cloth for the easiest application.
- 1). Sand the furniture with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the furniture and remove any sticky substances or finishes that might interfere with the application of the paper.
- 2). Wipe down the surface with a tack cloth to remove any loose particles that will show under the new surface.
- 3). Measure the pieces of particle board--the size of the top pieces, the size of each drawer.
- 4). Cut your pieces of contact paper (available in various colors and faux wood grain) according to the measurements you've taken.
- 5). Apply the contact paper to the furniture starting at a corner, so that it lines up evenly with the furniture. A rubber brayer will help with the prevention of bubbles under the contact paper.
