How to Inspect Wiring on Outside Lights
- 1). Disconnect the wiring from the control box, shut off the fuse or otherwise ensure that no power is running through any of the cables.
- 2). Walk the entire length of the exposed wiring, checking every inch for damage. You will know repairs are needed if you find any cracks in the exterior rubber tubing that covers the wires or, even worse, if any of the metal strands of the interior wiring are sticking out.
- 3). Wrap the electrical tape around the damaged area several times if you are only repairing the external tubing. Start an inch in one direction and continue until you have gone at least an inch past the damaged area, then repeat. Ensure the tape is pulled tight for a good seal.
- 4). Cut the wire clean if you need to repair the interior wire. Remove the damaged portion and cut an equal length of new wire if necessary. Strip roughly 1/2 inch of each end of the wire and twist the ends of the wires together tightly.
- 5). Heat the soldering iron. When the iron is ready, lightly touch the end of the solder to the tip of the iron and let the liquid metal drip over the bare connections of any exposed wires. Allow to cool for one hour, then wrap with electrical tape as described in Step 3. Repeat for any other connections that need to be repaired.
