Instructions for a Pipe Bender

    • 1). Get familiar with your pipe bender. Most manual pipe benders have two handles. One is short--the one you apply force to. The other is long--acts as an anchor when force is applied. The tube latch holds the tube in place over the name plate or jam, which the tube is actually crushed against. This piece is also graduated, listing various angles with marks or ticks. The roll support is attached to the short handle and rolls onto the pipe as it's bent.

    • 2). Start with the two handles in one long line. This looks like an open position; handles as far apart as they can be.

    • 3). Make a mark completely around the circumference of the pipe where you want the bent-point to be.

    • 4). Insert the pipe or tube to be bent into the pipe latch. Secure the pipe by closing the latch over it. This shouldn't make the pipe so snug that it can't adjust over the name plate.

    • 5). Match up the zero of the roll support with the zero of the name plate.

    • 6). Move the pipe until the mark you made on it matches with the mark for the angle you wish to make, such as a 45 or 90 degree angle.

    • 7). Secure the pipe in place by closing the latch over it firmly.

    • 8). Press the short handle toward the long handle. This will force the rolls against the pipe, bending it. Continue this motion until the zero on the roll supports reaches the angle mark you had chosen on the name plate.

    • 9). Pull the short handle away from the pipe and loosen the bent pipe from the latch.
