How to Plant Daylillies

    • 1). Prepare the planting area. Use a hand tiller; till the soil to a depth of 8 inches. Loosen and turn the soil. Remove rocks, plants and roots or other debris that you find along the way. Then spread 2 inches of aged compost over the planting area. Use your hand tiller to work the compost into the top 6 inches of soil, then rake the planting bed smooth. The earlier you prepare the bed, the better. If possible, prepare the planting area the season before you plant.

    • 2). Plant each daylily at the same level as its temporary container. Dig a hole the same depth and just slightly wider than the daylily's temporary container. Then remove the daylily from the container. Pull at the base of the plant to avoid harming the foliage; if the daylily does not come out easily, simply cut the plastic container away. Plant neighboring daylilies 1.5 to 2 feet apart.

    • 3). Water your daylily bed so that the soil is moist to the depth of the daylily's roots. Check the soil's moisture level daily. Water the bed with a gentle stream whenever the top inch or so of the soil dries out. Water should never pool on the surface of the soil. Continue to keep the soil moist to this depth with periodic watering until the daylilies establish themselves and produce new growth in six to eight weeks.

    • 4). Spread a 2-inch layer of organic mulch over the daylily's bed. This step is optional. However, it will help the soil retain moisture and keep the weeds at bay.
