- 1). Clear the area surrounding the sink, whether it be a bathroom or kitchen. Cover any exposed surfaces with plastic sheeting or tarp to protect them from stray sand. Otherwise, isolating the cast iron sink in an open environment is ideal.
- 2). Put on protective eyewear and a hooded painter's suit. Wear a respirator before sandblasting to avoid inhaling dust particles, especially in limited workspace.
- 3). Shut off the air valves on the blaster and fill the tank with the silica sand, available at local hardware and home improvement stores. Start the compressor and leave it to pressurize between 40 and 100 psi (pounds per square inch).
- 4). Set the unit to a low-pressure setting and stand 8 to 16 inches from the cast iron sink. Point the nozzle at the surface and squeeze the trigger to dispense the sand, blasting the area side to side for even coverage.
- 5). Gradually increase the pressure setting if necessary until any visible residue is removed, or until you reach the desired results. Use sweeping motions for large segments of the target, and short bursts of sand for trouble areas and small details.
