How to Make Home Decor Flow From Room to Room

    • 1). Paint the walls in complementary colors, particularly in adjoining rooms like a dining room and kitchen. The colors don't have to match, but they should work well together without creating a clashing feeling.

    • 2). Decorate all rooms in the home with the same general style. For example, if you go with a rustic, country look in the kitchen, continue that decorating style into the living room and dining room. Use the selected style as a general decorating guide while allowing some room for decor items that don't completely match.

    • 3). Paint or stain all wood trim in the home the same color to create visual continuity. Install the same style of trim in all rooms if you are renovating.

    • 4). Pull main colors from one room to use as accents in another. If the living room uses rich chocolate brown on the couches, for example, tie the color into the kitchen with a set of chocolate brown dishes on display.

    • 5). Repeat patterns in different rooms of the home. A plaid pattern on the tablecloth in the kitchen and a plaid throw pillow in the family room connects the two areas for better flow.

    • 6). Hang artwork in each room that is similar in style or color. To save money, create your own artwork on an inexpensive artist's canvas for a more definite connection.

    • 7). Install new hardware that matches the finishes in other rooms. If your bathroom faucet is brushed nickel, a light fixture with a gold finish creates a mismatched look. Clashing finishes in different rooms also disrupt the flow.
