DIY Retro Costumes
- 1). Go online with your child to research retro fashions. His costume does not need to be perfectly historically accurate, but finding out what people wore during the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s or '90s will give you both a starting point. Be sure you fully understand the look he wants. Make a list of the clothes and accessories that he considers essential before you go shopping. While you are researching, take note of hair and makeup styles. Add the accessories you will need to recreate those looks to your shopping list.
- 2). Go shopping with your child. Vintage clothing stores are most likely to have items from the era you are interested in, but they may be more expensive. The stores carry items that could be considered antiques. You might not want to buy a rare 1950s silk cocktail gown for your child to wear on Halloween. Also check out consignment and charity shops. You will have to dig a little harder to find what you are looking for, but these stores often have hidden gems. Or shop online for retro and vintage clothing.
- 3). Finish the look with retro hair and makeup. Practice a few days before Halloween so you have time to get the look just right. Leave her hairdo in and her makeup on for at least an hour so you know how well the look will survive after she leaves the house. Use extra hairspray or clips or tuck a lipstick into her purse for touch-ups, if needed.
