How to Make a Floral Headboard

    • 1). Measure the bed's width and add 2 inches.

    • 2). Draw a headboard template on a piece of plywood. You can make the headboard any height and shape you wish, as long as the base is equal to the width determined in the last step. Fabric will stretch more neatly over simple headboard shapes, such as rectangles.

    • 3). Cut the plywood along the template lines, using a jigsaw.

    • 4). Trace the headboard over a 2-inch thick foam sheet. If you can't find a large enough sheet, you can combine sheets to fit the headboard's area.

    • 5). Cut out the foam using an electric carving knife.

    • 6). Cut a piece of batting 5 inches longer than the dimensions of the headboard in all directions, using sharp scissors.

    • 7). Place the foam on the headboard and stretch the batting over the foam.

    • 8). Stretch the batting over the back of the headboard so it fits tightly over the foam. Attach the batting to the back of the headboard using staples.

    • 9). Cut a piece of floral fabric 5 inches longer than the dimensions of the headboard in all directions, using sharp scissors.

    • 10

Stretch the fabric over the foam and batting and over the edges of the headboard. Secure the fabric to the back of the headboard using staples. Pinch the fabric before securing it around corners for a neat appearance.

    • 11

Trim excess fabric with sharp scissors. You can use the headboard as-is, or finish it with upholstery buttons.

    • 12

Indicate the placement of the buttons on your headboard, using fabric chalk.

    • 13

Place the button kit's template over the floral fabric and trace it. Cut the fabric along the traced line.

    • 14

Place the cut-out right-side down over the button mold included with the button kit.

    • 15

Press the top button piece into the button mold and fold down the fabric's edges.

    • 16

Press the bottom button piece over the fabric you folded in the last step.

    • 17

Press the rivet tool included with the kit over the stem of the button. You should hear a snap. The button is now complete. Repeat this process until you have as many buttons as you need.

    • 18

Place the button over one of the placement markings you made earlier.

    • 19

Stitch the button to the headboard, using an upholstery thread and needle.
