Appalling Wedding Guest Behavior

Every so often, you hear of a wedding guest who did something so outrageous that it was all anyone could talk about.
No bride or groom wants to see this sort of thing happen at their wedding, but the truth is that it can happen to almost anyone.
Here is a look at some of the most appalling wedding guest behavior, and what to do about it.
I recently saw a video on YouTube of a wedding guest who was having way too much fun.
She wore a red dress that was entirely too sexy for a wedding, danced provocatively, and in the end, knocked the tent down with her antics! The poor bride and the other wedding guests had to crawl out of the ruined tent in their fine dresses and pearl earrings.
Clearly, that was not how the bride hoped to remember her wedding day! Now this is an extreme case, but shocking wedding guest behavior does happen on a smaller scale every single day.
There are two main causes of appalling behavior by wedding guests.
The first is the person who simply cannot accept that the bride deserves to be the center of attention, and that guests have a responsibility not to draw attention away from her.
This means that the mother of the groom should not wear a bright red low cut dress, the bride's cousin should leave her grungy boyfriend at home (you know, the guy she dates just to aggravate her parents), and the divorced parents of the bride should put their issues aside for the day of the wedding.
Many of those types of behaviors are somewhat predictable, which at least gives the bride and groom a chance to head them off in advance.
If you have a family member who has a tendency to show up inappropriately attired, go shopping with them to gently steer them towards something that will not cause a scene.
One bride I know, for instance, took her mother shopping to make sure that she picked a mother of the bride dress that would not show off her many tattoos...
at least not the ones on her cleavage! The bride also gave her mom a pretty pair of pearl earrings, knowing that she did not have any special jewelry to wear to the wedding.
If handled sensitively, you can head off disaster without hurting anyone's feelings.
Alcohol is the cause of much bad behavior by wedding guests.
This is not always to predict in advance, as you may be surprised by which guests decide to have one too many mojitos.
The best thing to do is to have a plan in place with the event coordinator of your reception venue.
Let them know that you expect the bartenders to cut off any guest who is clearly intoxicated (which actually the venue will want to do anyway for liability reasons).
Some venues like to set up a point person in advance to whom they can come in case they see that a guest needs to be invited to leave early.
The father of the bride or groom is often that go to person in case of trouble.
Certainly, do not be shy about discussing with the venue coordinator how best to handle that one uncle or friend who routinely makes a fool of himself at parties with alcohol.
They want your reception to be a success almost as much as you do, and will have the experience to help you make your party great.
With a little luck and planning, you will have no war stories to discuss over the post-wedding brunch about horrifying guests!
