How to Rescreen Porch Screens

    • 1). Remove the exterior battens holding the screen in place gently with a pry bar to preserve them for use after rescreening.

    • 2). Pull down the old screen from the porch structure. You don't have to pull out the staples, because the screen will rip away from them. Use a mallet to bang the staples flat against the wood beams.

    • 3). Attach the base strips along the wooden beams. The base strips should be slightly narrower than the beam they are attached to and should have rubber spline along the edges. Use a power drill and screws to attach the strips to the porch structure.

    • 4). Fit the screen into the spline along the base strips by placing an edge of screen on top of the spline and running the spline roller over it. The spline roller will push the screen into the spline.

    • 5). Pull the screen tight and roll it into the spline all around the edges of the base strips. You will have excess screen hanging over the edges of the base strips.

    • 6). Trim the excess screen with a utility knife.

    • 7). Reattach the battens over the screen seams. Use the power drill and screws to attach the battens to the porch structure.

    • 8). Paint or finish the battens to cover the screws and any damage that has appeared on the battens.
