How Do I Stop Algae in Garden Ponds?

    • 1). Clean your water feature. Remove the filter and rinse or replace if needed. Change the water at least by one quarter. Use the skimmer to clear debris. Clear the pump and check for cracks or leaks.

    • 2). Plant aquatic plants. They will compete with the algae for sunlight and nutrition. A thick mat of water lilies is ideal, as they will block the light from the water surface.

    • 3). Plant terrestrial shading plants. Algae needs light to grow; the more light, the faster it grows. Shading the pond will retard algae growth.

    • 4). Use beneficial bacteria and enzymes. These can be purchased at a pond or aquatics store. Make certain they are fish and plant safe. They will break down the algae and introduce acidity that the plant does not favor.

    • 5). Keep Koi. Koi eat algae and will graze on the plant, generally keeping it under control. Outside feeding of the koi should be kept to a minimum so they will eat the algae.

    • 6). Install a UV filter. The filter will effectively sterilize the pond water. Unfortunately, it will destroy beneficial bacteria and nutritive compounds in the water as well, so it is a drastic measure.
