Are Hot Tubs Bad for You?

104 117

    Facts

    • While just about anyone can use a hot tub, pregnant women, individuals with heart conditions and individuals with high blood pressure can increase their medical risk. Water-borne pathogens can damage unborn babies and extreme temperatures increase risk for the other groups.

    Other Issues

    • Chemicals needed to maintain water clarity and cleanliness can also create problems. You should always shower or bath thoroughly after using the hot tub. Take breaks when using the tub to allow your body to cool off. Lower water temperatures allow you to soak longer.

    Considerations

    • Never use a hot tub when drinking alcohol. The heated water accelerates the effect of the alcohol in your bloodstream. Eating a large meal can also make you more sluggish when using a hot tub. Feeling nauseous or lightheaded is also a problem when using a hot tub.
