How to Extract Oil From Roses
- 1). Select partially open roses. Once a rose bloom fully opens, it begins to lose its scent, which is most concentrated when it begins to bloom. Pick roses in early morning when the oils are at their peak.
- 2). Inspect roses for any signs of insect damage or disease. Discard any discolored blooms. The healthiest blooms will produce the best fragrance.
- 3). Remove the petals from the rose and place in a plastic food storage bag. Close the bag and bruise the petals by tapping with a small wooden mallet or rolling with a rolling pin. Bruising the petals helps release the natural oils.
- 4). Place the rose petals in a glass jar and pack down. Cover with almond or grape seed oil. Although olive oil or vegetable oil can be used, the fragrance of the final product may not be as sweet.
- 5). Shake the jar to thoroughly mix the ingredients and place in a warm location. Allow to set for 24 hours.
- 6). Strain the rose petals from the oil with a piece of cheesecloth.
- 7). Repeat the process, using the same oil, for three or more consecutive days until the fragrance reaches the intensity you prefer.
- 8). Store rose oil in a dark, tightly sealed bottle for best results.
