P90X - Make it Extreme!

The P90X is a training program that one can do over and over again, achieving excellent results each time.
Many outstanding people I've recently met during my Beachbody coaching endeavor have used the program multiple times, upping their level of fitness and health each time.
I started my first round of P90X barely able to finish the workouts and having to press "Pause" frequently just to continue on.
By the end, ninety days later, I was trying to match Tony Horton himself on every exercise in every video.
Yes, your body and performance can progress that quickly! As I approached the finish line of Round 1, I started to look ahead to Round 2.
I knew I was going to continue on, but I did want to mix things up a little bit for variety and to cater more towards my specific goals.
Honestly, not to be a braggart, but some of the routines just weren't pushing me anymore and I knew that if I wanted to continue moving towards the "next level" I had to find ways to challenge myself further.
Design a "Hybrid!" I had two predominant goals for Round 2.
My first goal was to reach a single digit body fat percentage (I finished Round 1 at approximately 11%) and my second goal was to develop "explosive power.
" In order to do this I created a program which I named the "TXF Hybrid.
" In creating this program I incorporated an extra day of weightlifting each week into Round 2, effectively doing the upper body routines from Phases 1 and 2 once each, per week.
I also subbed in some cardio routines from P90X+ and Insanity that focused on short, intense, explosive movements that really worked my fast-twitch muscle fibers.
For example, during Plyometrics, I might have only done the first twenty seconds of a thirty second exercise, but man-oh-man were those twenty seconds intense - jumping as high and as fast as I possibly could.
It wasn't unusual for my heart rate to reach the low-to-mid 180's during the cardio sessions of my second round.
Get Xtremely Creative! If you're early in your program, you might think the workouts are pretty tough (they are!).
But, trust me, if you keep pushing "Play" and give your body the proper nutrition consistently, you will reach a point where they seem "conquerable.
" During my second round I looked for ways to ramp up the intensity.
Here's three ways that I did it: I wore a weighted vest.
I got this idea from another Beachbody coach who's had tremendous results doing the P90X program.
The version I used is a V-Force brand, Plate model.
It allows me to "load" the vest with up to 40 pounds of weighted plates.
You think Plyometrics is intense? Try doing it with an extra 40 pounds strapped to your chest! As Tony might say, "have your little bucket ready.
" The addition of the vest also really upped the difficulty on pull-ups, push-ups and holding some of the Yoga poses when your weight is tilted away from being immediately under your legs.
If you cannot afford a weighted vest (I got mine for about $65 bucks on eBay) I've seen another really great Beachbody coach demonstrate doing pull-ups on YouTube just stuffing weights into a regular backpack! I wore ankle weights.
I introduced ankle weights as a way to make Ab Ripper X more intense.
It worked! I wouldn't recommend wearing the ankle weights for other activities though, such as Kenpo X.
I think wearing ankle weights while throwing kicks risks doing damage to the joints and/or connective tissue in your knees and ankles.
I wore weighted gloves.
I wore these while doing Kenpo X, occasionally while doing Interval X (from P90X+) and while doing a program that I created called "Treadmill X," which is basically sprint-intervals on my treadmill.
Your arms, obviously, are much shorter than your legs and the punches, when thrown with correct form, won't risk injuring the joints and connective tissue of your shoulders, elbows and wrists.
Want to feel like a boxer must feel after fighting twelve rounds? Do Kenpo X wearing weighted gloves! I'm looking forward to starting my third round shortly.
In addition to incorporating some of the Tony Horton One-on-One series DVDs, you better believe I'll be incorporating some of the above.
Want to take your workouts - and your level of fitness - to the neXt level? Then give some of these ideas a try! More info on the P90X
