Date of death: 27 July, 1934, France. Buried at Rabat, Morocco until 1961.

Louis-Hubert Lyautey was born in Nancy, France, in 1854. After studying at the Saint-Cyr military school, Lyautey spent two years as a cavalry officer in Algeria. In 1894 he was sent, as an administrative aide, to Tonking (part of North French Indochina), and then to Madagascar in 1897.

In 1903, promoted to general, Lyautey returned to Algeria at the request of the incumbent General-Governor Jonnart.

In 1912 Lyautey was sent to Morocco as the first resident-general. He devoted a significant amount of time to understanding the local region and people, and was particularly involved with the development of the seaport Casablanca.

Between December 1916 and March 1917 Lyautey served as Minister of War for the Briand government in Paris. He resigned over disagreements on the way the war on the Western Front should be run. He returned to Morocco, and was created Marshal of France in 1921. However, further disagreements with the French government during Abd-el-Krim rebellion led to the command of French forces being transferred to Henri Philippe Omer Pétain; once again Lyautey resigned, returning to France in 1925.

After his death in 1934, Lyautey's body was taken to Rabat, Morocco, for interment. In 1961, his body was returned to France.
