Don't Show Signs of Being a Poor Planner

    • Babbling in an interview because you have not prepared responses to typical interview questions demonstrates that you are unorganized, which may cause concern about your ability to conduct your work in an efficient manner. Arriving late can reveal a poor planner who may not have given herself enough travel time or may not have cared enough to familiarize herself with the location in advance.

    Don't Dress Casually

    • Casual dress for an interview conveys a message that you do not take the interview seriously. What is considered casual depends on the type of job you are applying for, since employees at a law firm may wear dress clothes to work each day while people in a factory wear uniforms or jeans and a T-shirt. Showing up in clothing that is more casual than clothing normally worn by the company's employees gives a first impression of lack of professionalism.

    Don't Bad-mouth Former Employers

    • Even if you had a bad experience with a past employer, you should avoid speaking critically of former employers or supervisors. Speaking negatively of others signals that you may not get along well with others. An employer does not want to hire an employee who causes conflict in the workplace that can disrupt work activities and possibly encourage valued employees to escape the conflict by leaving for other positions.

    Don't Fail to Ask Questions

    • Typically an interviewer asks at some point during the interview, usually at the end, whether you have questions about the organization or position. Not asking questions conveys that you have not given serious consideration to the position or that you are apathetic about working for the organization. By asking questions, you can demonstrate your level of interest and excitement about the job and the company.
