- 1). Choose a neutral color for the walls. According to HGTV, pale green is a great choice for a child's room, because it's calming and gender-neutral. Buttery yellow is also a good choice, since it's cheery, but not too loud.
- 2). Select medium-toned furniture. White furniture often appears too feminine, and dark or black usually suggests masculinity, so opt for a medium honey or oak-stained wood for beds, dressers and other furniture, as recommended by HGTV.
- 3). Be careful with theme. Instead of an overall theme, like sports or princesses, opt for something that's gender-neutral, such as shapes or nature. Stencil various sizes of one shape, like circles or squares, on the walls in bright hues such as turquoise and orange. A nature-inspired mural with lots of fun animals is appropriate for boys and girls.
- 4). Find bedding that's gender-neutral but still shows personality. Neutral doesn't have to mean khaki or beige. Look for a garden-inspired theme, nursery-rhyme characters, or a print with animals. Many retailers, such as Land of Nod, sell boy and girl versions of the same theme, so you could do one of each.
- 5). Add some personality. Twins are meant to be together, but they each have their own individuality. Celebrate that by stenciling their names on the wall above their beds. You can purchase stencils from any craft store in lots of different fonts and styles. Another idea is to monogram bedding with their initials. You can order monogrammed bedding online at lots of home décor sites, or take your bedding or fabric to a monogramming center near you (many craft and gift shops offer custom monogramming).
- 6). Give each child his or her own space. For older kids, this could mean their bed, their own desk or chair, or simply their own corner to decorate however they want. Mount a bulletin board on the wall for each child, and let them pin up their own favorite things.
- 7). Include some storage space. Since they're not likely to share much in the way of clothes or shoes, you'll have to store twice as much stuff in only one room. This can be achieved with double-racks in the closet, shelving units, and hidden storage under the beds or inside storage cubes or ottomans. Many kids' furniture makers offer beds with drawers built in underneath them---perfect for twins!
