    • 1). Determine the size mattress you need. If you already have a bed frame, you should choose the mattress that corresponds to it. Otherwise, you can usually choose from a twin, full, queen or king, with king being the largest size. Twin mattresses are about 38-by-75-inches. Full, also known as double, mattresses are about 53-by-75-inches. Queen mattresses are about 60-by-80-inches and king mattresses are about 72-by-84-inches.

    • 2). Figure out what comfort level you prefer. Comfort levels for mattresses range from ultra plush to very firm. What you choose depends on the type of surface you prefer sleeping on. The best way to tell is by trying it out, so don't be afraid to hop onto a few mattresses in the store to see how they feel.

    • 3). Decide on your comfort factors. Comfort factors generally involve the amount of comfort layers and whether or not foam is involved. Comfort layers are the padding and fibers that provide cushioning on the mattress. Foam can be in the form of latex foam, which naturally conforms to your body, or memory foam, which responds to the weight and temperature of your body.

    • 4). Choose a height for your box spring. Box springs generally range from five or six inches in height to nine inches. If you already have a high bed frame and a high mattress, a larger box spring could make getting in and out of bed more difficult for some people. Make sure the length and width of the box springs correspond with the size of your mattress.
