Global Positioning Systems (GPS), devices aid in navigation in and out of the car; however, it is important to know the applicable traffic laws of your state to ensure you use the device in a legal manner. Florida law does not prohibit the use of navigation devices, but it does limit where they may be placed on the dash or center console. - Section 316.2004 of the Florida Motor Vehicles Code prohibits driving a motor vehicle with any "sign, poster, or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side wings, or side or rear windows of such vehicle which materially obstructs, obscures, or impairs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway." This generally prohibits any sort of devices which may obstruct the driver's view and may prohibit affixing GPS devices to side windows or the front windshield.
- Section 316:2952 prohibits driving a motor vehicle on any of Florida's public roads with any object affixed to the front windshield except for the following: a certificate or paper required by law, sun screening material located at the top of the windshield or state-issued automatic toll payment devices. This statute effectively prohibits placing GPS devices on the front windshield.
- Section 316:303 prohibits the placement of television screens in any location viewable by the driver; however, there is a special exception made for electronic displays used for vehicle navigation systems. This section allows built-in and dash-mounted GPS devices.
