How to Integrate Multiculturalism Into the Classroom
- 1). Encourage students from other cultures to talk about aspects of their culture that they think would be interesting. These students can bring in objects from their culture, talk about the holidays that their culture celebrates, or share some cultural food with the rest of the class.
- 2). Arrange for your students to write letters to kids from other countries. If you don't have access to a class in another country, use the link in the Resources section to link up with one.
- 3). Study novels and nonfiction works that show what life is like in a different cultural setting. Encourage students to research this setting further and share their findings with the class, possibly for extra credit.
- 4). Arrange for guest speakers from different cultures to give a presentation to your class, or to the entire school. The guests don't need to be trained speakers, but they should have a strong command of the English language and should have stories or topics to share with the students about their culture.
- 5). Assign projects that entail research about other countries and cultures. For example, you might have students work in groups to create multiethnic foods for a food fair, or create a poster to present their findings about a different culture.
