    • 1). Evaluate the parent plant for imperfections. Look for signs of stress: water deprivation, lack of sunlight or nutrients. Your desired cut should be in an area where the plant is in good health. A newly grown limb is a great choice.

    • 2). Cut into the plant where the chosen stem meets with a larger branch. If the plant is very young, cut below the juncture, taking part of the old stem with the new growth you have selected.

    • 3). Dip cuttings into a powder rooting hormone, such as Rhizopon, if they are cut from parent plants that are very mature or slightly ill. This hormone will aid rooting for even the most stubborn plants. It is a dry dip formula that requires you to dip the bottom third of the cutting into the powder.

    • 4). Place the nutrient enriched soil into the planter. Set in the cutting and moisten the soil until it presses firmly together. Do not let the soil get soggy. Wrap the plastic over the planter and the plant, and seal it tight.

    • 5). Remove plant from planter and plastic wrap after the plant has exceeded double its original size. Place into the ground or garden after the threat of frost has passed in late spring.
