Secondhand Smoke in the Workplace

Have you ever felt like you were being held captive? Consider this: What if you work in a bar or other public establishment that allows smoking and you are a nonsmoker, what can you do? Options are pretty limited to being able to protect yourself from the effects of secondhand smoke and in the past there wasn't much thought given to it.
Recent studies have shown that breathing secondhand smoke can have deadly consequences; in fact nearly 50,000 people die each year from being exposed to it.
More and more evidence is exposing the effects of secondhand smoke, especially on the heart.
Ready for the good news...
with recent smoking bans, according to a report released from the Institute of Medicine, it appears that they are having an impact.
Of course this is only a small step but nevertheless it is a step in the right direction.
The workplace should be a safe place to go without worrying about getting cancer or developing heart problems because of the environment.
If we are going to allow people to smoke we need to learn to live together so children, adults, and the elderly nonsmokers don't have to suffer the effects of secondhand smoke.
For some smoking is a choice and society has made it so for others it isn't.
I remember the days of smoking...
I really didn't pay much thought to smoking in bars, restaurants, or other closed in places let alone that the smoke from my cigarette was hurting other people.
I think when you take this into it gives even more reason to quit smoking.
We all have the right to smoke if we want to but do we have the right to make others breathe in the poisons we exhale? Obviously not! If we are going to smoke we should do it outdoors away from nonsmokers even if the establishment we frequent permits smoking.
Chances are the people that work there don't have a say.
The owner that made the decision is most likely sitting at home enjoying his glass of wine while the worker making minimum wage and with no insurance is at risk of having a heart attack or developing heart disease just to bring you your next cold one.
If you are going to choose to smoke you should do it responsibly and consider who else you are hurting.
Remember that they have families and they most likely aren't receiving any special benefits for working in an unsafe environment and that is exactly what it is.
The health effects of secondhand smoke are serious and as a society we all need to step forward to help protect one another.
