How to Build an Inexpensive Kitchen Banquette
- 1). Leaf through decorating magazines and look online to come up with ideas for where to place your kitchen banquette. While a kitchen banquette or breakfast nook is often positioned beneath a window, it can be placed anywhere in the kitchen as long as it is away from the flow of traffic.
- 2). Design the kitchen banquette planning to use comfortable, deep pillows on the seat and to support the diner’s back. A traditional kitchen banquette is around 18 inches high, which accommodates a 2-inch-thick cushion. Using a height of around 15 inches will allow for a cushion 4 or 5 inches thick, which is much more comfortable. The seat box should be around 20 inches deep to allow for large, fluffy cushions on the seat back.
- 3). Measure the space where the kitchen banquette will be installed, and draw it carefully to scale on graph paper. Include other elements of the kitchen, so you can tell if the banquette is in the right location. Be sure to include appliances like the oven and refrigerator and take space needed for the doors into consideration.
- 4). Select ready-made cabinets in a finish that will harmonize with the rest of the kitchen. Check out cabinets designed for use on top of a refrigerator to find the smaller size you need - around 15 inches high and 20 inches deep. Cabinets will provide additional storage for the kitchen.
- 5). Buy or make 4- to 5-inch cushions to place on the seat and against the wall. Decide if you want standard square cushions or square ones with rounded corners. Select an attractive fabric that is durable enough to stand up to daily use. If the kitchen banquette is situated under a window, the fabric should be able to stand up to sun and daylight without fading.
