How to Use DOS Mode on Apple

    • 1). Install DOSBox. Under OS X, this is as simple as going to the DOSBox webpage and downloading the Mac OS X build as a DMG archive. Downloads are also available for most other operating systems, including Windows and multiple flavors of Linux. Furthermore, translations are available in most European languages as well as Korean, Persian and Turkish.

    • 2). Run DOSBox and immediately close it. This is done to force DOSBox to create a default configuration file in your Library directory. You will need to perform some modifications on this file in order to link the DOSBox environment to your Mac OS X environment.

    • 3). Open the DOSBox Preferences file. Spotlight does not search files in your Library directory, so you will need to find it manually in Finder. Go to your home folder and open the Library folder and then the Preferences folder. The file name of the preferences file will be something similar to "DOSBox 0.73 Preferences."

    • 4). Find the [autoexec] section of the preferences file. Under the "[autoexec]" line, add the following commands:

      mount c ~
      c:

This will mount a folder on your Mac OS X file system as the C: drive under the DOS environment and immediately change the current path to that folder so you can begin work. In this case, the tilde symbol (~) is a Unix shortcut for the current user's home directory. For example, on a user named Joe's computer, the command "mount c ~" will use the home folder, "/Users/Joe/" as the C: drive under DOS. You may type any valid file path on your OS X file system in place of the tilde to have the location mounted as the C drive under DOS.

      Save the config file.

    • 5). Start DOSBox again. It should inform you that it is mounting your local directory to the C: drive and transfer you to C:. You now have a functioning MS-DOS environment that is linked up to a portion of your Mac OS X file system, and you should be able to run any MS-DOS compatible software directly within your Apple computer.
