    Tools

    • Using the correct tools when installing a ridge vent will ensure proper installation and minimize the amount of time necessary for installation. If you don't have the following tools, you may purchase them at your local hardware store. You need a hammer, cutting shears, measuring tape, chalk-line and pencil. The tape measure should be at least 16 feet, and the chalk-line should be full with red or blue chalk; black chalk will not show up well on a shingle roof.

    Material

    • Purchase shingle to match the existing shingle on your roof if you are installing a ridge vent over an existing roof. The ridge vent can be purchased in 10-foot sections and must be cut to fit your roof. You also need 2-inch roofing nails and clear silicone caulk for sealing off the joints between the ridge vent overlaps.

    Installation

    • Before you install the ridge vent, you will need to make sure that the ridge of your roof has openings to allow the air to escape the attic. Cut small 2-by-12 inch holes in the ridge, but don't go below the coverage area of the ridge vent. Make these cuts about 3 feet apart along the length of the ridge and on both sides. Snap a chalk-line across the length of the ridge and follow that line when you install the ridge vent. Attach the vent using the 2 inch nails, and cut any shorter lengths using the cutting shears. Caulk the joints using clear caulk, and cover the ridge vent with matching 6-inch single squares to finish off the vent.
