Drying Pinewood

    • 1). Cut up the pine into suitably sized pieces. Thin thinner the boards of wood the shorter the time needed to dry. For the quickest drying make sure the pine is no more than 1 inch thick.

    • 2). Strip all, or at the very least some, of the bark off the wood. If leaving the bark on use the axe to remove a wide strip of bark so the air can easily get into the grain of the wood.

    • 3). Stack up the wood on a pallet on a flat piece of ground. The pallet keeps the wood off the ground and the flat ground stops the wood from bending and twisting as the moisture is removed. Stack the wood neatly. A pile of wood will leave the logs in the middle still damp. The air needs to get to all of the wood pieces evenly.

    • 4). Cover the wood in a waterproof tarpaulin leaving the cut ends exposed. This will protect the wood from the rain, but still allow the air to blow through the stack. If there is rain, cover the entire stack. Hold the tarpaulin in place with bungee cords or rope.

    • 5). Leave the wood for at least 6 months, but the longer it is left the better. Leave the wood in a dry, warm room indoors for a few days before use to dry it out a little bit more.
