How to Apply Teflon Tape
- 1). Wipe the threaded male end of the pipe with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove any dust, debris and water.
- 2). Tear off a strip of Teflon tape that is approximately four times the diameter of the pipe. For example, if the pipe is 1 inch in diameter, you will need a 4-inch piece of tape.
- 3). Wrap the Teflon tape around the pipe threads, making sure that you are wrapping in a clockwise direction and stretching the tape slightly as you wrap. Continue in this manner until the threads are covered in tape, overlapping each turn to cover completely.
- 4). Attach the corresponding female nut or other connection to the Teflon-covered end of the pipe, tightening snugly with a pipe wrench or adjustable wrench.
- 5). Test your connection by turning on the water source and looking for leaks or drips. If the connection is leaking, tighten the nut one quarter turn at a time until the leak stops.
